Hon’ble Union Finance Minister, Shri Pranab Mukherjee in his Speech on 12th August 2009 had stated the objectives of new Direct Tax Code which was formulated (Draft Code) to improve the efficiency and equity of our tax system by eliminating distortion in the tax structure, introducing moderate levels of taxation and expending and tax base. The new Code is designed to provide stability in the tax regime which will simplify the language to enable better comprehension and remove ambiguity to foster voluntary compliance.

The Committee on Direct Taxes of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is organizing a One Day Lecture Series on Direct Tax Code Bill – 2009 on Monday, the 31st August 2009 at Park Hotel, Kolkata from 10.00am. The Programme will be hosted by the Eastern India Regional Council of the ICAI.

The theme of the meeting is (a) to provide a platform to the members to interact with the officials of Central Board of Direct Taxes (b) To clarify the issues arising from the new Direct Tax Code Bill 2009 (c) To gather comments from the members on the Bill to enable the Institute to compile them for being placed before the Ministry.

The delegate fee is Rs. 500/- per participant (Cheque to be drawn in favour of “The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, EIRC”) which would cover the cost of CPE background materials and Lunch etc. 6 CPE hours will be granted to the members of the ICAI.
