As part of the drive to elevate the members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to a global platform, the Professional Development Committee of the ICAI organised a three-day National Conference on Professional Development and Enrichment. The Goa Branch of the WIRC of the ICAI hosted this conference on the 7th, 8th and 9th of August 2009 at the San Rafael Conference Hall of Majorda Beach Resort.

Mr Cesar Menezes, President of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry and CA. Uttam Prakash Aggarwal, President of the ICAI, cordially consented to being Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively for the Inaugural Session. CA. Uttam Prakash Aggarwal was felicitated by the Chairman of the Goa Branch, CA. S.G. Hegde on his first visit to Goa as President of the ICAI. Mr. Cesar Menezes applauded the contributions of Chartered Accountants to the development of industry and trade in Goa and urged them to further hone their skills by participating in such conferences. CA. Uttam Prakash Aggarwal stressed on the emergence of the role of today’s chartered accountant as a ‘total business solution provider’. CA. Uttam Prakash Aggarwal, alerted the audience about the urgent need to Save Planet Earth, in a short informative documentary film. The Welcome address was delivered by CA. Anuj Goyal, Chairman of the Professional Development Committee. During the Inaugural session the Goa Branch Chairman CA. S.G Hegde, released the Goa Branch Member’s Directory at the hands of the Chief and Guest of Honour.

The three day National conference was divided into ten technical sessions. On the first day of the conference, i.e. the 7th of August 2009, there were three technical sessions delivered. The faculty for the first session CA. Narendra P. Sarda, member of the Standards Advisory Council of the Indian Accounting Standards Board, discussed the main differences between Indian v/s International Accounting Standards and also gave a brief overview of the IFRS. Speaker of the second technical session, Shri K.P. Sasidharan, Director General (Commercial) C& AG, focused upon the Role of Chartered Accountants in Environment Sustainability and stated the need of environmental auditing, natural resource accounting, carbon emission auditing, and sustainability reporting and so on. CA. Bhavana Doshi, Senior Advisor to KPMG, gave a very precise view on the Key Aspects of Managing the Practice. The second day of the conference began with the fourth technical session which was delivered by Shri Vijay Kapur, Director of the ICAI, who deliberated at length on the subject Auditing Standard- Significant Issues. CA. Vimal Punmiya, author, proprietor of M/s Vimal Punmiya & Co and President of the All India Business Council enlivened the audience with his real life experiences on the topic of the fifth technical session Search, Seizure and Survey-Practical Issues. The tedious topic was however, made more interesting by humorous anecdotes. The issue Taxation on Business Income was addressed in detail by CA. Padam Chand Khincha, in the sixth technical session. During the seventh technical session, speaker CA. (Dr.) Sanjiv Agarwal focused on the subject Services Tax- Landmark Judgements. CA. (Dr.) Girish Ahuja, held the rapt attention of the audience by sharing his seasoned expertise on the Latest Changes in TDS/TCS: Law and Procedures, in the eighth technical session. The third and final day of the conference, had CA. Nagesh Pinge discussing the topic of the Paradigm Shift in Internal Audit and the emerging Role of the Chartered Accountant at length, in the ninth technical session. The tenth and final technical session was a panel discussion about the Union Budget 2009. CA. (Dr.) Girish Ahuja, CA. (Dr.) Sanjiv Agarwal, CA. Vimal Punmiya, and CA. Mahesh Sarda were the panellists for the discussion.

The three day conference ended, on a pleasant note, with a well deserved felicitation ceremony for the services rendered by the various volunteers of the Goa Branch of the WIRC of the ICAI not only for the conference but also on the cricket field and in conducting examinations of the ICAI at the Goa centre.

In all, the conference was highly successful and achieved its objectives of enlightening members about major changes in the core fields of Accountancy.
