Under the aegis of the Board of Studies of ICAI, the Coimbatore Branch of SIRC of ICAI jointly with the Coimbatore Branch of SICASA hosted a National Convention for CA Students on 18th&19thof December 2014. The theme of the convention was “iCAn – Endure. Excel. Succeed.”. The convention witnessed massive participation of 2034 students from across the country and was held at the magnificent Hall - E at CODISSIA, Coimbatore.

The formal inaugural session was graced by Chief Guest CA. G Ramaswamy, Past President ICAI, Guest of Honour, CA. M Devaraja Reddy-Chairman BOS, CA. Jomon K George,SICASA Chairman, CA P Viswanathan, Chairman of the Coimbatore Branch of SIRC of ICAI, CA N N ShanmugaVadivel, Secretary of the Coimbatore Branch of SIRC of ICAI and CA S Rajesh, Chairman of the Coimbatore Branch of SICASA of ICAI were also present in the inaugural session.

The Convention was attended by CA ShanmukhaSundaram, Past Chairman of SIRC of ICAI, the Managing committee members of Coimbatore Branch viz CA M Robert Kennedy, Vice Chairman, CA B Saravanan, Treasurer, CA K P Gobinath, Immediate Past Chairman, CA.P.Balasubramani, SICASA Nominee, CA.K.S.Shanmugham, Committee Member, Past Chairmen of Coimbatore Branch namely CA.K.Jalapathi, CA.R.Kandasamy, CA.L.Kamesh, CA.S.A.Gopalakrishnan, CA.S.Krishnan CA.K.Ravi, CA.K.Badrinarayanan and other Chartered Accountants namely CA.V.Ramnath, CA.Kalyan Srinath, CA.Harish and CA.Anish among others.

Out of more than 70 papers received from CA Students, 12 best paper presenters were selected to present their paper inthe Technical Sessions on the topics ranging from Companies Act 2013, Accounting Standards, Direct Taxes and Indirect Taxes.

The first session was on Indirect Taxes with CA Sai Prasad from Bengaluru as the session chairperson. The student speaker Deepak Korah George presented a paper on VAT and Service Tax in Construction Industry, B.Madushalini on CENVAT Credit under Service Tax and Excise and Pratik H Mehta on Place of Provision of Services Rules.

Next was an Interaction session where CA M Devaraja Reddy, BOS Chairman answered and cleared the doubts and queries raised directly by students.

There was a special motivational session by SICASA Chairman, Jomon K George following the lunch on iCAn–Recharge, Gain a Momentum and Surge ahead.

After that the second technical session of the day was held on Direct Taxes. The session chairperson CA R Boopathy, Past President of ICAI elucidated on the topic and the three student speakers Pooja Dinesh Gupta, M Dileep Kumar and Survajith S Krishnan presented their papers on Domestic Transfer Pricing, Transaction in Immovable Property and Depreciation and related issues under IT Act, respectively.

The evening was filled with entertainment and performances by the students along with Singers – Syed Subhan and Parvathi.

On the second day i.e., on 19th December 2014, the third technical session was on Companies Act 2013, in which CA Kamal Garg was the session chairperson and the three student speakers Maharshi Amar Shukla, Ashwin Narayanan S and Saket Dilip Batra presented their papers on Auditors appointment and rotation, Related Parties and Depreciation Rules under the new Companies Act respectively.

The next session was addressed by CA Charanjot Singh Nanda, Central Council Member of ICAI on iCAn – Unleash the power within; be an effective communicator.

After that the fourth technical session was held on Accounting Standards with CA D S Rawat from New Delhi presiding over as the session chairperson. E.Sushmitha presented her paper on AS 9, Abhay Surana on AS 16 and Vishal S Kakani on AS 22.

A special session on iCAn – Think Different – Reach Heights was handled by Dr. Pawan G Agrawal, Int’l Motivational Speaker, Mumbai and another session on iCAn – Carve the future was handled by Padmashri CA T N Manoharan, Past President of ICAI.

Following these sessions was the valedictory session with CA P V Rajarajeswaran, Chairman, SIRC of ICAI as the chief guest and CA Shanmukha Sundaram, Past Chairman of SIRC of ICAI as the guest of honour. The managing committee members of the Coimbatore Branch were also present at the valedictory session.

The whole event was managed and executed by volunteers of Coimbatore Branch of SICASA. Overall the Convention was a huge success with massive participation enabling us to achieve the desired objective and making the students to believe ‘iCAN’.
