| The Committee on Trade Laws and WTO of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India today organized an Interactive Workshop on Competition Laws & PTAs/FTAs at New Delhi for the Members of the Institute. The Workshop was part of a series of Workshops intended to be organized by the Committee during the ensuing year across the country for Members on the contemporary issues. Inaugurating the Workshop, CA. Anuj Goyal, Chairman, Committee on Trade Laws & WTO outlined the objective of such Workshops and stated that the theme itself very aptly summarizes the direction of areas which are receiving the prime attention of the nation at large. |
| On the occasion, Mr. Augustine Peter, IES, Economic Adviser, Competition Commission of India made a presentation on the Competition Act and the role of professionals particularly Chartered Accountants in this regime. Further, Mr. Rajgopal Sharma, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India also made a presentation on the European Union Broad Based Trade and Investment Negotiations with India. The Workshop was well attended by CA. Sunil Talati, Past President, ICAI, CA. Shanti Lal Daga, Vice-Chairman, Committee on Trade Laws and WTO, CA. Subodh Agarwal, Council Member, CA. Vinod Jain, Council Member apart from a cross section of Chartered Accountants. |
| Earlier, during the day, the Committee on Trade Laws & WTO had met at New Delhi and released a publication titled ‘Canadian Advantage – A Research Study on Canadian Business Opportunities’ as part of a drive undertaken by the Committee doing country specific research studies. The basic objective of these research studies is to provide guidance to the Chartered Accountants and others concerned on the trade laws/rules applicable in major trading partners for (a) setting-up businesses in such countries; and (b) operating as professional accountants in such countries. The study, apart from providing guidance to Chartered Accountants in practice and in service and others concerned to have an insight in respect of Canadian business opportunities, also lists opportunities for Chartered Accountants in Canada and the structure of accountancy profession in Canada including various requirements to be fulfilled by foreign accountants to operate in Canada. Mr. Shailendra Kumar, Under Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance also made a presentation before the Committee on the WTO/GATS Regime and Accountancy Services. Shri O. P. Vaish, Council Member, ICAI also attended the meeting. |
